What Caused California's Drought?

Check out this great article from Slate on causation and climate change. As the author makes clear, asking what "caused" California's drought misses the point. Climate change is like smoking. If a smoker develops cancer, can we say definitively that cigarettes were the cause? No, but we know that smoking made developing cancer far more likely.
